Where Can We Find Chaga?

Where can I find wild chaga? was one of the first questions I asked the professor of biology at my university. I knew he was a chaga “hunter” and I wanted to know where I could find this super powerful mushroom.

If you want your chaga mushrooms to be as fresh as possible, you will need to go out in the sticks and experience the thrill that comes with chaga hunting.

On the other hand, if unfortunately, you live in a place where chaga doesn’t naturally grow, you can still buy chaga on Amazon.

There isn’t much information on where to find Chaga mushroom. Probably because people don’t want to expose their spot. It may also be because the western culture hasn’t been interested in the mushroom for a long time and we just now are getting aware of its benefits.

Whatever the reason, what you will read is based on my personal experience. On my almost 10 years of chaga hunting.

Let’s jump in!

Birch Patch

Duh!? Right?

It’s obvious that mushrooms found on birch trees are found in a birch patch. What I meant is that when there is a patch, the “infections” (chaga mushrooms) spread more easily, increasing the chance to encounter the mushroom.

If you don’t know where to find a birch patch, the best way to find one is to explore. Go out in the wild and look at the trees. If the trunk is white, it is most likely a birch.

Pro tip: You should also look at a forest map showing the essence of the dominant trees in the area.

Near Rivers and lakes

Probably because the wind picks up in open areas, making it easier for the Chaga spores to travel, lots of Chaga are found near a lake or a river.

I am not aware if the humidity coming out of a body of water have anything to do with the chaga proliferation, but usually, humidity is crucial to growing mushrooms. so the fact that Chaga is commonly found near a lake makes perfect sense.

So? Where Can We Find Chaga?

There is, unfortunately, no good answer to this question. The areas mentioned are where you will most likely find the mushroom, but it’s far from being a given.

The best way you can have a successful mushroom hunt is to go out there and explore the forest near you. Eventually, you will find a good spot and you will be able to harvest the precious inonotus obliquus

If you are patient, you can also grow your own chaga mushroom in your backyard, but don’t count on it to have a cup this afternoon.
